Randall Y. Grimes, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.C
Randall Y. Grimes, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.C joined Cardiovascular Medicine in June,
2001. An Atlanta native born at Grady, Dr. Grimes attended public school in the City of Atlanta and graduated from Frederick Douglas High School in 1980. He attended the University of Georgia, swam with the Dogs for two years and graduated in 1984 with two B.S. degrees in molecular biology and physics. He won the L.L. Hendron Undergraduate Physics award consecutive years in 1983 and 1984. He is a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
After receiving his medical degree in 1988 from Emory University Medical School,
Dr. Grimes completed his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Tech in 1996. His Ph.D. work focused on the fluid dynamics of mitral regurgitation and he studied prosthetic heart valves. While at Georgia Tech, he won the President's Award for the highest score on the Ph.D. qualifying exams for his class.
While working toward obtaining his Ph.D. he completed his internal medicine residency at Morehouse School of Medicine. This was followed by a three-year cardiology fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Harvard Medical School. While there, his work received the American College of Cardiology Young Investigator Award. At MGH, he had advanced training in Transesophageal Echocardiography and has a special interest in valvular heart disease. He received a faculty appointment to Harvard in 1999 in the Echocardiography division of MGH.
Dr. Grimes has authored peer-reveiwed papers and presented multiple research abstracts at all major cardiology and bioengineering meetings all over the world. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiology and is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Grimes holds a patent for Devices and Methods for Percutaneous Mitral Valve Repair.
A multiple Ironman, marathoner and masters division swimmer, Dr. Grimes married his medical school sweetheart and has three beaming daughters. The best part about being a doctor for him is helping the willing find health.
Dr. Grime is currently on staff at WellStar Kennestone Hospital.
